Despite Nigeria’s oil wealth and agrarian advantage, many Nigerians narrowly survive on a daily basis. According to the World Bank in 2014, 33.1% of Nigerians were living below the poverty line. This means that many Nigerians do not have the wherewithal to meet needs such as access to clean water, healthcare, and quality elementary education. Mostly affected are rural men, women, and children who depend on agriculture to meet these basic needs.
Tracking Needs, a program of Basic Rights Watch, advocates for governmental/non-governmental intervention in local communities to address their core urgent capital needs. This is to eradicate extreme poverty and promote participatory budgetary processes. Our primacy encompasses thematic areas of health, education and clean water provision.
The program was also birthed to contribute to the realisation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): 1 [No poverty], 3 [Good Health and Well-being], 4 [Quality Education] and 6 [Clean Water and Sanitation] in Nigeria. The SDGs are a set of 17 International Goals spearheaded by the United Nations [UN] and its consequent 193 Member States, as well as global civil society. They were adopted at the UN Sustainable Development Summit of September 25 – 27, 2015 in New York, USA and has a time frame of 2015 – 2030. Tracking Needs aims at greatly influencing the Nigerian Civil Society contributions to the goals achievement.
