On 18 February 2017, the Tracking Needs team was at Chakuwa community, Gurku, Nassarawa state for research and investigation over their urgent capital needs. This was following baseline indicators that opined that the community has several capital challenges. The community has a population of 3500 with no access to electricity, no access to healthcare facility and dilapidated primary school. Basic Rights Watch has commissioned several advocacy strategies over the case of Chakuwa and is calling on all relevant governmental and non-governmental authorities to intervene in the community.

Chakuwa primary school facility is grossly ill-equipped with only 2 classroom blocks for primary 1 – 6 and 2 teachers. Pupils sit on blocks and shabby desks to learn. Regardless this, the classroom blocks are ill-equipped with leaking zincs, rough walls and mud floor. This jeopardizes the ability of the pupils to access quality elementary education in a conducive environment. The school needs human resource, desks, books, while the facility needs rehabilitation and expansion.

Chakuwa Community has no health facility and has to go over 10 km to access a community healthcare facility. This has extensively affected the community who now rely on traditional birth attendants and have recorded some deaths during emergencies. There is an urgent need for the provision of a healthcare centre in the community, so they can access healthcare for their children and nursing/pregnant mothers most importantly.

“Primary 1 – 3 stay in the same class. Primary 4 – 6 stay in the same class. Just imagine how they could be learning. This is because of the lack of adequate number of school blocks. This has affected their learning and jeopardized normal class promotion.” – a community member
We need urgent governmental intervention in health and education

On 5 April 2017, we sent advocacy letters to all concerned governmental personnel and organizations for them to intervene on the #TheStoryofChakuwa. The list encompass, His Excellency, Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, the Executive Governor of Nasarawa State; Hon. Gaza Jonathan Gbefwi, Member Representing Karu, Keffi and Kokona Federal Constituency, Federal House of Representatives; Distinguished Sen. Abdullahi Adamu, Senator Representing Nasarawa West Senatorial District, Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; Hon. Hashimu Jibrin, Member Representing Gurku, Nasarawa State House of Assembly; The Honourable Commissioner of Education, Nasarawa State; The Secretary,State Universal Basic Education Commission, State Ministry of Education, Nasarawa State; and The Executive Secretary, Universal Basic Education Commission, Abuja.
